Non-Roman scripts

Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, Urdu, Arabic, and Panjabi are but some of the many languages taught in schools today across the United Kingdom. Their place on the curriculum is indicative of their economic and political importance and the contemporary face of a very diverse multicultural society here at home. The non-Roman scripts used in these languages present a challenge to both teacher and learner, and ICT can often be used to advantage to assist pupils and enhance teaching.

The first challenge is to make sure that school computers offer capability in every language taught. This can be daunting when you are working with languages in other scripts. CILT has produced downloadable Setting up your PC guidance for several languages in other scripts, focusing on setting up PCs for word-processing in language teaching and learning. This work has been continued and expanded to other languages by Steve Cushion, a former HE Advisor at CILT. See the Setting up your PC section.

The other sections outline key issues for teachers of languages in non-Roman scripts, each with a supporting downloadable file.
