CILT launches new Primary Languages website

In light of the government’s recent decision to make foreign language learning an entitlement for KS2 pupils by 2010, and the Dearing recommendation to include a Language in the KS2 curriculum when it is next reviewed, CILT, the National Centre for Languages has worked alongside the DfES to create online training resources designed to support primary colleagues, headteachers and trainers in achieving this target. The Primary Languages Training Zone was officially launched on 16 March at the 2007 Primary Languages Show in Manchester and features a variety of CPD materials including:

  • video clips
  • audio files
  • talking heads
  • session transcripts
  • themed resources
  • searchable media library
  • My Zone

Materials have been assigned to different zones and themes, to make access easier. For instance, in the Leaders' Zone, you can select from:

  • Making the Case
  • Introducing the (KS2) Framework
  • Resourcing
  • Planning
  • Transition
  • Using ICT

In the Teachers' Zone, there are themes such as:

  • Embedding
  • Active Learning
  • Using the KS2 Framework
  • Progression
  • Assessing and Recording

The Trainers' Zone is only open to colleagues who are taking part in the CILT Training Trainers Programme at national and regional levels.
The interactive materials provide examples of innovative practice mapped to the KS2 Framework for Languages as well as interviews from headteachers, governors and classroom teachers along with other supporting materials. These can be found by searching the Media Library which is divided into the following themes:

  • Year (3-6)
  • Language (currently French, German, Spanish, Italian, Bengali, Japanese)
  • Activity (Big Books, Pairwork, Roleplay, Song)
  • ICT (Interactive whiteboards, Internet, Email)
  • Strand (Oracy, Literacy, Intercultural understanding, Knowledge about language, Language Learning Strategies)
  • Provider (Class teacher, Foreign Language Assistant, Teaching Assistant)

In the Support and Guidance section, there is further help and links to resources for leaders, teachers and trainers involved in implementing primary languages.

ICT use is a key element throughout the site. In an interview found under the theme of 'Using ICT' teachers discuss the benefits of using technology to enhance language learning, foster motivation and promote intercultural understanding. They also contribute their ideas on the benefits and flexibility of creating digital resources which can be shared and stored easily. The accompanying 'Using ICT' worksheet offers written support.

In the Media Library, the ICT category includes a variety of short video clips showing different ways in which an interactive whiteboard can be used to present songs, play games and practise grammar points in the languages classroom.

For further information, a Primary Languages Training Zone user guide is available for download from the DfES Standards site.
