Classroom Research

Carrying out your own classroom research can be a very rewarding experience for all involved. Thanks to projects such as Languages ICT Action Research, TeachNetUK and Web Journals in Language Education, teachers from this country and Europe are researching the role of technology in language learning, as a way of motivating pupils and raising attainment.

iPods and Podcasting

Podcasts are sound files which can be downloaded and listened to on a computer or mobile device such as an mp 3 player. The term ‘podcast’ is a cross between the words ‘iPod’ and ‘broadcast’, although it is not essential to have an iPod to start podcasting. All you do need is a microphone plugged into a PC and a little imagination. Language teachers are experimenting with podcasting to see how the emerging technology can improve teaching and learning. A number of recent projects specific to languages have produced encouraging results.

Quick-stop news

Clipbank

ClipBank is a popular resource made by Channel Four which draws from their extensive library of educational programmes for 11 - 16 year olds. Now available in French, German and Spanish, the DVD -Rom includes some 250 video clips arranged by topic and grammar point. Finding suitable clips is easy thanks to the recently launched ClipBank Utilities, which can be downloaded for free from the ClipBank website. You can also watch a demonstration video starring Baldev Singh, Winner of National Innovation in Education 2004, who praises ClipBank for encouraging:

• development of high level ICT skills in students and teachers

Why study languages? CD-Rom

The Languages, Linguistics & Area Studies Subject Centre (LLAS), based at the University of Southampton, has produced a CD-Rom called Why study languages? It is intended to persuade pupils to carry on learning languages in KS 4 and post 16. The CD costs £ 15, but a free copy is available at your local Higher Education Institute ( HEI ).

Would you like to be an E-Guide?

The National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) is organising free training for adult education staff who want to help their colleagues develop the skills and knowledge to use technology in delivering their subject. The three day E-Guide programme is funded by the Learning and Teaching Council. Training events will be taking place all over the country between September 2006 and March 2007. Each E-Guide is encouraged to develop an action plan and cascade their skills and knowledge to their local network. If you are interested in becoming an E-Guide for your area, visit the NIACE website for more information and to download an application form.

Language forums migrate to Mailtalk

The Languages ICT and Linguanet forums have merged and migrated to the discussion list service provider Mailtalk. Existing member details and archives have been transferred, but, to post messages, you will first need to register a Mailtalk password. Guidance on how to do this can be found on the Mailtalk website. New members are very welcome.

TES Blog ICT & Modern Foreign Languages

The latest posts on the TES ICT blog, written by Joe Dale, French coordinator at Nodehill Middle School on the Isle of Wight include:

Joe has recently been appointed a Languages Lead Practitioner for The Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and is organising a one day conference called ‘Integrating ICT into the MFL classroom’ at his school, Nodehill Middle School on the Isle of Wight, on 20 October 2006. Self-review framework

Becta has produced an online tool for schools to assess and benchmark their use of ICT across the curriculum. The Self-review framework allows schools to evaluate their current provision and offers practical advice, based on best practice case studies, on areas that could be improved.

The framework is divided into the following sections:

Practical Support Pack

The Practical Support Pack - Learning and Teaching using ICT is a free resource from the Department for Education and Skills, designed to help primary and secondary colleagues use technology to raise standards in their subject. The Materials for languages, developed in association with CILT, the National Centre for Languages, include lesson plans, classroom resources and expert advice on ways of using presentation software, email and the Internet.
