Effective use of ICT in subject teaching (Secondary)

The CD ROM ‘Effective use of ICT in subject teaching (Secondary)’ is produced by Becta Publications and can be ordered free of charge.

The suggested activities have been put together by practising teachers and cover a wide range of ideas on how to exploit ICT in subject teaching across KS3 and KS4. The modern foreign languages materials are designed for whole class teaching, large and small group work or pair work and illustrate techniques for using different types of software and hardware to facilitate language learning in the classroom. The resources benefit from their flexibility as they can be adapted for different situations and different languages.

In the 101 ICT activities section of the CD ROM, there are ten examples relating specifically to languages. These describe:

  • digital video - mini sketches based on a TV holiday programme
  • email to communicate electronically with foreign language speakers
  • the Internet to find and share information about a French town
  • spreadsheets to plan travel arrangements and accommodation details
  • presentation software such as PowerPoint to present and practise language in a variety of ways
  • digital images incorporated into PowerPoint to present different role-play situations
  • carrying out surveys using spreadsheets
  • sound files with PowerPoint and authentic software from France for telling the time
  • the Internet and PowerPoint to develop and practise conversations about the weather
  • word processing templates to enrich language and identify verb tenses

In the Effective Practice section, language teachers can also find a video case study of an ICT in Practice Award winner. This personal account shows how ICT has enhanced the teaching of MFL with particular reference to the benefits of using a classroom performance system (CPS). Well worth a look. Go on.
