The ICT Register
Launched in November 2004, the ICT Register is a unique database of schools around the country that have volunteered to share their expertise in ICT with other schools in their area. The register gives schools who are looking to raise their awareness on the uses of ICT across the curriculum the opportunity to contact colleagues in their local area for help and advice. It also allows like-minded colleagues, including language teachers, to network with each other on cutting-edge methodology on the use of ICT in their subject area. Schools are expected to update the services they can offer on the site to reflect the latest developments. In each region, one secondary and one primary school are designated as a Focus School for a year, enabling them to work closely with the central Register team and provide further support for other registered schools. Focus schools can also be involved in coordinating test-bedding opportunities and communicating Register news to the other providers in their region.
To find out which schools are members of the ICT Register in your area, simply go to the home page of the site and click on the appropriate section of the map of England. To find schools specifically offering services for languages and ICT, click on Search services and then type in Modern Foreign Languages in the Search for box. Examples of services to date are as follows:
-
Video conference to support language teaching (North West region)
-
Creating and using elearning resources (East Midlands region)
-
Resources for teaching languages at primary level (North East region)
-
Use of Interactive whiteboards in MFL (South East region)
-
Innovative teaching of MFL (South Central region)
To apply to appear on the list, secondary schools need to be affiliated
to the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and offer innovative ICT
practice in at least two of the above categories. Primary Schools should
be able to provide expertise in Strategic Leadership of ICT and Learning
and Teaching with ICT. If schools fulfill these criteria, they can download
an application pack from the site. It is free to join and schools approached
for extended services can negotiate their own fees with the client school.
