Supporting teachers of languages in other scripts
As
well as ensuring teachers have skills across a range of ICT and can
apply ICT effectively and appropriately, you need to make sure that
school computers offer capability in every language taught. This can
be challenging (and sometimes costly) when you are working with languages
in other scripts. CILT, the National Centre for Languages is producing
Setting up your computer guidance for ten such languages,
focusing on setting up PCs for the use of word-processing in language
teaching and learning. This guidance will become available for download
here over the coming months for the following languages.

CILT runs hands-on training in regional locations for teachers of languages in other scripts. To date, the Getting Started with ICT courses have been offered in Arabic, Bengali, Gujarati, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, Panjabi and Urdu. Check the CILT website to find out what is available this term.
The arrows to the top right of your screen lead to guidance relevant to one's current level of ICT use in the teaching of languages. Be aware that each user area includes specific information for teachers of languages in other scripts, towards which you may like to direct colleagues.
You can download lists of vocabulary which both pupils and teachers will need when using ICT in the classroom. These Say IT in…… sheets from Becta are available in 29 languages, including many languages in non-Roman scripts.
Although not focused specifically on the use of ICT, CILT’s Community Languages website offers a range of useful information on topics such as the termly bulletin, routes to QTS, exams and training and includes a national register of specialists. Teachers can also join the Linguanet Forum, which allows individuals to keep in touch with CILT and a community of colleagues by email. Teachers may also like to contact their representatives at ALL via a Language Committee, which exist for Arabic, Community Languages, Japanese and Russian. ALL also has a Mandarin Special Interest Group.
