Introduction

It has never been easier for teachers and pupils to make contact with their peers across the world in order to share ideas and experiences, form partnerships and engage in project work.

For those interested in the ways ICT is used in other countries to teach and learn languages there are online journals, and reports. For those wishing to engage in projects with partner schools abroad there are opportunities to take part in assisted programmes. Moreover, technological advances make it easier than ever to bring  the international dimension into the languages classroom in exciting and engaging ways.

UK governments have long recognised the importance of languages and the value of developing cross cultural understanding. In addition to national policies and frameworks, which promote the development of intercultural awareness in the learning of languages, teachers and pupils take part in European and other international projects and programmes, all of which serve to develop a European and global dimension in education. The British Council manages the European Union’s Socrates programme within the UK and its Global Gateway enables schools to form partnerships across Europe and the world.
