Using ICT effectively: video case studies
The video case studies in this section of ICT in Action illustrate extended, integrated and effective use of ICT in the teaching and learning of languages. Five schools across England took part in the production of the case studies, which give a picture of the range and variety of hardware, software and teaching techniques which can be employed to transform learning and enable pupils to progress from teacher-led activities to creative independent work with ICT.
Working on familiar topic areas, teachers are seen using the interactive whiteboard for whole-class work, and engaging pupils in stimulating ways. Materials accessed on the network enable pupils to consolidate learning while a range of software and hardware is used to promote independent, collaborative creative work among pupils.
Teachers and pupils in the case studies move from review and reinforcement activities to collaborative creative projects. The videos include samples of teachers and pupils using:
- interactive materials created with common authoring software and accessed both for whole class work on the interactive whiteboard and independently by pupils to consolidate learning;
- strategies for learning, such as ‘pegging’, talking about grammar, or discussing success criteria, all of which complement ICT activities;
- digital photos, video, audio, slideshows, and podcasts used in creative work.
The case studies are:
- Using ICT to develop writing skills and engender a sense of achievement in pupils who find foreign language study challenging.

The project was funded by Becta and filming took place in the spring of 2008. Also funded by Becta was the production of a series of downloadable advice sheets on 'Using ICT effectively at Key Stage 4', which outline a selection of online resources of value in the teaching and learning of modern languages. These can be viewed at Key Stage 4 Resources in the Technology for Languages section of this site.
